Why Your Business Deserves Much More Than a DIY Logo

Starting a business as a military spouse often means building something from scratch with limited time, a tight budget, and a life that can change overnight. So it’s no surprise that when it comes to the initial branding, many of us turn to tools like Canva or AI-generated logos just to get something up and running. I understand it, and I get it. We’ve all been there when it seems the most straightforward option.

However, I was recently chatting with a friend who told me how she’d spotted her exact Canva logo being used by another business at a local garden centre. Same icon, same layout… just a different name…she’s a baker! Awkward, but completely out of her control. It’s a perfect example of why template-based logos can sometimes cause more problems than they solve.

Now, this isn’t a Canva or AI-bashing session. These tools are brilliant for getting started. They help get you visible quickly when budgets are low and time is tight (which, let’s face it, is often the reality in military life), but the keyword here is starting. When you want to build a business that grows, connects, and stands out amongst your industry, a professionally designed logo isn’t just a ‘nice to have’, it’s a worthwhile and necessary investment.

Let’s talk about why…

1. Standing out instead of blending in

Templates are designed to be used by lots of people; that’s the whole point. This means there’s always a risk that someone else will end up with something very similar, whether that’s next week or next year. When someone sees your brand, you want them to think of you, not wonder where they’ve seen it before.

We already spend enough of our military life introducing ourselves from scratch; your business shouldn’t have to do the same.

A designer doesn’t just create something that looks nice. They create something that’s unique to you, built around your story, your values, and the people you want to attract.

2. First impressions and credibility

You get seconds to grab someone’s attention, whether that’s on Instagram, your website, or a flyer on a noticeboard in the mess. Whilst a DIY logo can absolutely do the job in the early days, it will start to feel a bit… DIY as your business grows.

A professional logo and brand package helps you project credibility straight away. It tells people: this is a business that takes itself seriously. When you’re constantly meeting new people, building new networks, and reintroducing yourself every couple of years, that first impression matters even more.

3. It’s not just a logo, it’s a strategy

This is the bit people don’t always realise. When you hire a designer, you’re not just paying for a logo. You’re paying for:

  • Thought and research

  • Understanding your audience

  • Positioning your brand in your market

  • Creating something that works across multiple platforms

As a designer, this is exactly what I look at, not just how something looks, but how it works and functions within your industry. How much are you charging for your products or services? Who do you want to be working with – what’s your niche market? Your logo needs to show up consistently at every touchpoint: your website, social media, packaging, print… all of it.

Whether you’re working from a kitchen table, a spare room, or the corner of a mess somewhere, your brand still needs to hold its own.

4. Your story is your superpower

Every business starts for a reason. Maybe it’s about creating flexibility around your family. Maybe it’s rebuilding a career after a posting. Maybe it’s finally building something of your own after years of working around someone else’s job.

Whatever your ‘why’ is, that’s your superpower. That’s what makes your business unique and unmistakably you! It’s something no one else can copy. When your branding is rooted in that, it doesn’t just look good; it connects. It feels alive. It tells your story. A template can’t tell your story. AI can’t understand the reality of military life, the last-minute changes, the solo parenting, the constant resets, or the determination it takes to keep showing up anyway. A great designer will take all of that and turn it into something visual, something that actually reflects you.

5. It supports your growth and confidence

The vast majority of businesses that start with a DIY logo end up rebranding. They outgrow it, It stops reflecting their business, it doesn’t attract the right clients and they realise it looks too similar to others (hello, garden centre moment).

Rebranding isn’t just a new logo; it often means updating everything. When you feel proud of your brand, you show up differently. You feel more confident sharing your business. You’re more likely to put yourself out there, raise your prices, and attract the kind of clients you’ve been aspiring to work with.

When everything else feels a bit up in the air, having a brand that feels solid and ‘you’ gives you some stability in an ever-changing lifestyle.

So, where do Canva and AI fit in?

They absolutely have a place. If you’re right at the beginning, testing an idea, or just need to get something live, use them. Start showing up, but don’t let that be the end of your branding journey. Think of it as your start point, not your destination. When you’re ready to grow, to stand out, and to build something that truly reflects your business… that’s when investing in a designer makes all the difference.

Let’s be honest, military life is unpredictable enough as it is. You don’t get much control over postings, schedules, or where you’ll be living next year… but your business? That’s something you should get to control.

You can make sure your brand is recognisable, consistent, and unmistakably yours, wherever you are. No spotting your logo on someone else’s stall while you’re just trying to buy plants at the local garden centre.
