Starting or growing a business can feel exciting… and overwhelming.

As military spouses and partners, we’re often building these businesses alongside postings, deployments, childcare, relocations and everything else that comes with service life. Flexibility matters. Confidence matters. And having the right foundations in place really matters.

In this short series, “Business Foundations: What to Know and What to Ask.” I will cover many accounting and tax topics relevant to small business owners.

My aim isn’t to drown readers in technical detail. My aim is to help you understand the essentials, know when you can handle something yourself, but most importantly, recognise when it’s time to seek professional advice.

Asking for help at the right time often saves a huge amount of stress (and money).

This series consists of:

The goal is to provide a guide that is practical, clear and relevant to the types of businesses we may be looking to establish as a network.

About Me.

Starting my own firm was just as much a personal decision as it was a professional one.

As a military spouse, relocation is part of life. A new posting meant a new move, a new location, and the need to rethink my career path. Like so many in the military community, I’ve had to balance career ambitions with moves and stretches of solo parenting.

Since having a family, and with a spouse who is here one minute then off the next, work flexibility went from a “nice to have” to becoming essential. Building my own business gave me the ability to create a career that works around family life, rather than constantly feeling like the two are in conflict.

I chose to build something portable, resilient and sustainable, a business that could move with me and grow wherever we’re posted.

Claire Borg Accounting was born from that transition.

Before launching my firm in 2023, I spent over a decade working in both large accountancy practices and in-house finance roles. I’ve supported small start-ups, growing businesses and established companies across a wide range of sectors. I’ve advised business owners as an external advisor, and worked leading finance functions internally.

Over the years, one thing has become very clear to me: technical expertise on its own isn’t enough.

What really makes the difference is clear communication, practical advice, and a human approach. Accounting and tax shouldn’t feel overwhelming and I care deeply about making it understandable and accessible.

That’s what has led me to write this series. I’ve loved pulling together the key accounting and tax fundamentals in a way that’s practical and easy to follow.
